Woman who drove into fatal hit-and-run scene charged with impaired

A driver from Sault Ste. Marie faces impaired charges after police say the 42-year-old drove through a highway closure as OPP investigated a fatal hit and run on Highway 17 near Bruce Mines early Saturday morning.

“Shortly after 1:30 a.m., a car traveling westbound on Highway 17 approached the closure and drove past a fully marked police vehicle with its emergency lights activated that was parked in the middle of the highway,” says a news release from East Algoma OPP. .

Investigating officers initiated a traffic stop as the accused drove into the collision scene. It was determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested.

As a result, April Lovelace is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on March 2 and stands charged with:
• Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) CC
• Drive on closed highway, contrary to section 134(3) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
• Drive motor vehicle – not equipped with ignition interlock device, contrary to section 11 of the HTA Ontario Regulations 287/08
