Police incident with ‘several crime scenes’ close Hwy 1 in Coquitlam

A car chase, gunshots and a SkyTrain station closure disrupted traffic and caused fear on the streets in Coquitlam, Surrey and New Westminster on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident is believed to have started at a car dealership in Surrey mid-afternoon when a vehicle was stolen.

This led to a police chase that was captured on video at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Pitt River Road and showed a black Mercedes sedan traveling at high speeds under pursuit.

The vehicle is stopped on Highway 1 in Coquitlam near the IKEA store.

Witness Randy Kang said that he stepped out of his work at 4 pm at a Lougheed Acura and saw several police vehicles.

He then spotted police officers chasing two people. One of those people fell to the ground and was surrounded by the police, while the second person was chased.

Kang heard what sounded like three gunshots, but the person being chased did not fall to the ground. He was unsure what happened next.

A statement from the Coquitlam RCMP released to media says, “There is a major police incident with several crime scenes. Our officers are currently investigating and a fulsome update will be provided in the near future.”
